CHERAI
BEACH
Cherai is the latest entry into the tourist dairy. Golden
beaches, coconut palm corridors, backwaters and historical monuments
adorn the list of hot spots in this little village. The lovely beach
here borders Vypeen island. Affectionately called the Princess of
the Arabian Sea, this beach is only a 30-minute boat ride or 35-km
road trip from Cochin, and 22 km from the Cochin International Airport.
The Arabian Sea on the western side and the back waters of Vembanad
Kayal on the East have given this upcoming tourist location a beauty
that no other place can offer. Thick; coconut groves and Chinese
fishing nets on the waterfront, and ideal conditions for swimming
are added attractions.
Cherai is the only beach in the state where dolphins are
occasionally seen. This beautiful beach, stretching 15 km, is studded
with seashells of various hues and shapes. From very ancient times,
Cherai has been famous for its sea food delicacies that can be washed
down with the country liquor- toddy. The nearby village provides
glimpses of Cherai's main industry - prawn farming.
A visit to the fishermen's village, fishing boatyard, fishing harbour
will never be forgotten.
